Steve Charnovitz serves on the full-time Faculty of the George Washington University Law School, where he teaches international trade law and international business transactions. Before joining the faculty, he practiced law at WilmerHale in Washington. Earlier, he was the first director of the Global Environment & Trade Study at Yale University and the Policy Director of the (US) Competitiveness Policy Council.
Charnovitz began his career in the Policy Office the US Department of Labor (DOL), where he evaluated federal programs for trade adjustment assistance and unemployment insurance. Later he joined DOL's Bureau of International Labor Affairs, where he was responsible for labor negotiations in the Caribbean Basin Initiative. He has also been a legislative assistant to Speaker Jim Wright and Speaker Thomas Foley in the US House of Representatives.
He serves on the Board of Editors of the American Journal of International Law and on the editorial boards of Journal of International Economic Law, World Trade Review, and Journal of Environment & Development. He has written extensively on international trade law, multilateral environmental governance, the International Labor Organization, and the role of civil society in international affairs. He contributed a chapter on labor and environmental issue to Restarting Fast Track (1998).
