Occupy UC Davis: Chancellor asks Campus Cops to Fall on Swords
UC Davis Chancellor Katehi has tried to shift all the blame for the attack on OWS students on her campus to the campus cops. She’s trying to save her job.
It won’t fly. She’s gotta go. There’s little doubt that the police attack on her students was coordinated out of her office. And if it was not, then that means she’s out of the loop and should be fired anyway. She’s the Chancellor of the University and it is clear that she has no interest in the welfare of her students, nor in promoting the ideals that universities hold near and dear. She’s against freedom of speech, freedom of inquiry, freedom to dissent from Wall Street.
She’s one of NYC Mayor Bloomberg’s minions, doing their best to protect the top 1% from those who object to the rape and pillage of American society. We know that there was a coordinated attack on OWS protestors from shore to shining shore, organized out of Manhattan.
All of those elected and appointed officials who participated in the attack on the US Constitution must be run out of office–beginning with Bloomberg, and Oakland Mayor Quan (whose office unleashed one of the worst police riots in recent US history), then UC Berkeley Chancellor Birgeneau (who has tried to backstep from initial praise of police rioters) and of course on to the police chiefs of all these cities and campuses.
We know the officials will try to save their jobs by pointing fingers at the cops they sent to beat protestors. That always happens. And not to deny culpability of the cops that actually do the beating and spraying, those in positions of responsibility are responsible. They should at least lose their jobs.
And to be clear, I know that most of the police are honorable, put in difficult situations. And most of them choose not to use unnecessary force. I visited OWS at Liberty Park (the name was changed to Zuccotti Park and is managed by a board that includes Mayor Bloomberg’s wife–apparently the owners realized early on that it was inappropriate to have a park named Liberty in a city run by a Mayor of the 1% by the 1% and for the 1%) twice. The members of New York’s finest that I encountered there were on the whole pleasant, helpful, even cheerful. Things got more dicey when we moved on to Times Square.
Still, I can understand that when you’ve got 1000 protestors and a relative handful of cops, it can get scary. And I also understand the daily trials of a campus cop–I’ve been on university campuses since 1971 and I’ve witnessed some pretty obnoxious behavior by students (full disclosure: I participated in some of that). So I understand the quiet animosity some campus cops harbor.
But when campus cops beat the students they are sworn to protect, they must go. And so must their bosses. All the way to the top.
And if Governor Brown does not dispatch the National Guard to Berkeley and Davis to protect the students that the Chancellors refuse to protect, then he must go. If President Obama does not send troops to Liberty park to protect OWS protestors, bringing tents and sleeping bags, and safe heaters and portable toilets, then he must go, too.

Campus police report to Chancellor: Condem chancellor not police. Every qualified California student should get a place in University of California(UC) system. That's a desirable goal for a public university. However, UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Birgeneau displaces Californians qualified for education at Cal. with $50,600 tuition Foreigners.
Paying more is not a better education. UC tuition increases exceed the national average rate of increase. The UC Board Of Regents jeopardizes Californians attending higher education by making UC the most expensive public university.
Self-serving tuition increases are used by UC President Mark Yudof to increase the pay of 80,000 eligible faculty & others. Payoffs like these point to higher operating costs and still higher tuition for Californians. Instate tuition consumes 14% of Ca. Median Family Income! UC is hijacking our kids’ futures: student debt.

Just because some cops let the hotheads do the damage does not them honorable make. Anyone who was there who had the chance to stop the outrages (attempted homicides, not to put too fine a point on it) and did not, has no honor. I read the body language of the stand-aside cops. Better look again, Randall. Those coppers aren't there to protect students. They're there to protect wealth, power and privilege FROM the students.

Just read the end of the article. I agree we must protect students from the cops, but there's one thing that must keep the cops' "understandable animosities" in check – professionalism! Hence, no honor as per my above. —-I'm still puzzled. Did you see the videos? At no time were the cops under any sort of threat, or even stress, whatsoever! They walked up to a line of seated students and sprayed them at will. A week ago, I saw video of a cop targeting a seated demonstrator who had his head down. The cop ran up, ripped off his mask and blasted him full in the face. This is the act of a coward, bully, and sadist. To claim that the other cops who aren't as monstrous, are honorable, well, you're on your own there.

You write: "But when campus cops beat the students they are sworn to protect, they must go." But I don't recall any video of this particular incident that shows cops beating students. Indeed the cops tried to avoid even touching them — that's what pepper spray is supposed to accomplish. If you've seen the longer video, beginning several minutes before the photo op, the fat cop approaches the seated protesters to tell them they will be sprayed if they do not move, and some guy (the leader?) says something like, That's okay, whereupon the protesters begin preparing, and the audience begin to chant, Don't shoot the students! No one was injured by the pepper spray. No one was moved by it either, so the cops began carrying the kids away — i.e., physical force was a last resort.
You're absolutely right about the Katehi's cowardice. But how is she a Bloomberg "minion"? And why should anyone outside NYC care about him anyway? He's influential, but hardly a puppetmaster. OWS exaggerates — and distorts — Bloomberg's significance because he, being an extremely wealthy politician, conveniently embodies their ostensible target, the influence of money in politics. I say ostensible, because OWS's actions are inconsistent with their supposed goal — otherwise they would have focused their ire on the corrupt politicians who actually work for them. The problem is not that some people are wealthy and others are not. The problem is politicians who legislate as much to increase their personal influence as to benefit their constituents. The politicians themselves create the incentives that draw "monied interests"; and they see nothing wrong with allowing these interests to influence them. This is the essence of crony capitalism.

One thing is that if you find yourself searching for a student loan you may find that you will want a co-signer. There are many conditions where this is correct because you might discover that you do not have a past credit history so the loan company will require that you’ve got someone cosign the money for you. Thanks for your post.
